I used to see networking as an intimidating and exclusive activity, reserved for seasoned professionals with polished skills and years of experience. It felt inaccessible, leaving little room for newcomers or students like me. That perception changed as I delved deeper into marketing. During one class, we had the privilege of hearing from guest speakers who shared their career experiences, and the critical role networking played in their success. Their advice on building and maintaining genuine relationships inspired me to take a more proactive approach.
This semester taught me that networking isn’t about formalities or handing out business cards, it’s about forming authentic connections. However, the turning point came when I ran into a member of the BSNN (Black Student Network at George Brown College). Seizing the opportunity, I shared my video with her and explained my concept. Her feedback was invaluable, she offered suggestions to refine my approach, even recommending ideas like creating a custom poster to accompany the video, which would make my application stand out even more.
From this experience, I realized:
