I used to see networking as an intimidating and exclusive activity, reserved for seasoned professionals with polished skills and years of experience. It felt inaccessible, leaving little room for newcomers or students like me. That perception changed as I delved deeper into marketing. During one class, we had the privilege of hearing from guest speakers who shared their career experiences, and the critical role networking played in their success. Their advice on building and maintaining genuine relationships inspired me to take a more proactive approach.

This semester taught me that networking isn’t about formalities or handing out business cards, it’s about forming authentic connections. From engaging in marketing seminars to reaching out to professionals or reconnecting with an old friend, I’ve learned that networking can transform not only your career path but also your confidence in navigating it. These lessons have profoundly shaped my approach to building meaningful connections in the marketing industry.

A JOURNEY OF GROWTH AND DISCOVERY

This semester has been transformative, offering lessons that will shape my career and personal growth. A key insight I gained is that challenges can often be blessings in disguise. Limited resources, tight deadlines, or unexpected obstacles push us to be creative and resourceful, turning limitations into strengths.

Another valuable takeaway was the importance of standing out. For someone with a shy personality, this initially felt overwhelming. However, I’ve learned that standing out means embracing what makes me unique, my cultural background, creativity, and introversion, and letting those qualities shine authentically.

Networking also became more meaningful to me. What once felt intimidating now feels like building genuine, lasting relationships. Small actions like following up, engaging online, and showing interest create connections that foster mutual growth and support.

Reflecting on this journey, I realize how much I’ve grown. I now see challenges as opportunities, value my individuality, and approach networking with authenticity and confidence. These lessons have given me the tools to step out of my comfort zone and confidently shape my future.

NETWORK AND RESOURCES

This semester, networking took on new meaning for me, especially during the Career Fair organized by George Brown College. It was a valuable opportunity to showcase myself and connect with industry professionals.

Although many organizations weren’t hiring at the time, I used the chance to make a lasting impression. With a smile and genuine enthusiasm, I approached booths, asked thoughtful questions about their work and ideal candidates, and shared a bit about my own experiences.

Before concluding each conversation, I asked to connect on LinkedIn, a simple step that has proven invaluable. Staying connected allows me to track updates, check for job openings, and even reach out directly when opportunities arise.

The Career Fair wasn’t just about meeting people; it was about building relationships with the potential to open doors in the future. Through curiosity and a willingness to learn, I’ve gained both meaningful contacts and a clearer understanding of how to present myself in professional settings.

JOB-HUNTING RESOURCES AND MAINTAINING CONNECTIONS

Networking has been an essential part of my job-hunting journey. During one of our Digital Marketing classes, we had the privilege of meeting a guest speaker whose session left a lasting impression. Afterward, I connected with her on LinkedIn and discovered she frequently shares marketing job opportunities, creating valuable chances for her network.

Grateful for her generosity, I subscribed to her email list, which has made the job search much smoother. Her updates keep me informed and motivated, providing consistent access to potential roles.

CO-OP PLANS AND THE ROLE OF NETWORKING

As I look ahead to my co-op placement, networking has already played a vital role in shaping my plans. The relationships I’ve built through events like the Career Fair and classroom networking sessions have helped me identify potential organizations and better understand the industry. By connecting with professionals and staying in touch, I’ve positioned myself to reach out for advice or recommendations when the time comes to secure a placement.

These connections have also given me access to valuable insights about what companies are looking for, which has made me more confident in tailoring my applications and preparing for interviews. Networking isn’t just a tool for job hunting, it’s a continuous process of learning, sharing, and growing alongside others in the industry. As I step into the next phase of my career, I know these relationships will remain an integral part of my professional journey.

ADD VALUE: TIPS AND BEST PRACTICES FOR NETWORKING

Networking is a skill that grows with practice and persistence, and the lessons I’ve learned this semester have transformed how I approach it. Here are some best practices, enriched with personal anecdotes, to help you build genuine and impactful connections:

1.     DON’T BE AFRAID TO SHOWCASE YOUR WORK

One of the most valuable lessons I learned came during my latest job application. We were tasked with creating a one-minute video promoting three college events, using our creativity to make the details believable. I poured my efforts into preparing a script, filming, and editing the video, and I was proud of the result.

However, the turning point came when I ran into a member of the BSNN (Black Student Network at George Brown College). Seizing the opportunity, I shared my video with her and explained my concept. Her feedback was invaluable, she offered suggestions to refine my approach, even recommending ideas like creating a custom poster to accompany the video, which would make my application stand out even more.

From this experience, I realized:

  • Be Open: Share your work without fear of judgment. Humans grow through feedback and adaptation.
  • Seeking Advice: Input from others can bring fresh perspectives and elevate your efforts.
  • Be Proactive: Take the initiative to approach others and present your ideas; you never know how impactful their feedback could be.

2.     TAKE OPPORTUNITIES AS THEY COME

As the Dean wisely said during our recent Career Fair, "Don’t say no to any opportunity." This mindset shifted my approach to networking and career development. Not every opportunity will seem perfect at first glance, but each one offers a chance to learn, grow, and discover new paths. If I hadn’t approached the BSNN member that day, I wouldn’t have had the chance to enhance my job application and push myself further.

3.     FOLLOW UP AND STAY CONNECTED

Networking doesn’t end after an event or meeting—it’s about maintaining relationships. After connecting with someone, follow up with a message or engage with their updates online. For example:

  • After the Career Fair, I connected with professionals on LinkedIn and thanked them for their time. I continue to engage with their posts, keeping the connection alive.
  • Staying in touch has made it easier for me to check for job openings and reach out directly when opportunities arise.

4.      APPROACH NETWORKING WITH CURIOSITY

Rather than seeing networking as a task, approach it as an opportunity to learn. When meeting someone new, ask questions about their work, challenges, and insights. Genuine curiosity not only helps build rapport but also shows your willingness to learn and grow.

5.     BE PREPARED TO ADAPT

Sometimes opportunities come in unexpected forms, and being flexible is key. During the job application process, I learned that presenting myself authentically and being open to advice could reshape my approach entirely. Adapting to feedback and new ideas not only improves your work but also leaves a lasting impression on those you connect with.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Networking is about more than collecting contacts; it’s about building relationships that foster mutual growth. By showcasing your work, embracing opportunities, following up, and staying curious, you can make meaningful connections that shape your career journey. My experiences this semester taught me that every interaction, whether big or small, has the potential to teach, inspire, and lead to new opportunities.
